The Kill Order – prequel to The Maze Runner – is now out in paperback, which inspired us to ask Dashner about some of the other books he’s enjoyed lately. Here’s what he shared.

Here are five fantasy/sci-fi/horror books I’ve enjoyed recently.

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
The Shining has always been one of my favorite books, and to see Uncle Stevie write a sequel was just too good to be true. I loved it, so much. Creepy and scary, but also very heavy on the sentimental side, too.

The Gathering Storm by Brandon Sanderson
The Wheel of Time series has been a love/hate thing for me for two decades of my life. Mostly, I’ve loved it. And it was so sad to see Robert Jordan pass away. I’ve been gearing up to read the last three by Sanderson, and this first one was absolutely spectacular. I really enjoyed it.

The Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness
This series blew me away. Relentlessly fast paced and full of twists, but also amazing characterization and beautiful writing. It made me jealous that I hadn’t written it!

The Void Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton
Okay, this guy blows my mind. He’s so smart I can barely keep up with him. It’s definitely the hardest “hard sci-fi” I’ve ever read, feeling so authentic. I don’t know if I’ve ever read anyone who combines his vast imagination with the potential future like this guy.

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill
I’m so glad that Stephen King decided to breed humans with his wife, because his son is just as brilliant as he is, in my humble opinion. This book really gave me the chills, really made me care about the characters, and it also made me laugh. Sound like Uncle Stevie?
