What Books Did You Receive?

I’ll never forget one Christmas.

I was 13. It snowed that year, a rarity where I am from. Sitting under the tree with its flashing lights and reflective tinsel, I unwrapped gifts. I remember opening one box above all others. In fact, I can’t remember any other Christmas gift I’ve received beyond this one. It was a great day. Because it was the day I received The Elfstones of Shannara and The Wishsong of Shannara by Terry Brooks.

Needless to say, that was a pretty important day. I went on to be a fan of Terry’s work and eventually began working for him as his webmaster. If that Christmas hadn’t happened and my mother hadn’t gifted those books to me, I would not be the same person.

Not at all. Shows the power of books.

Warranted, it’s much more difficult to buy me books now. Most friends and family have given up on that idea. I am now in a position where I receive advanced reader copies and advanced electronic books. I read what fantasy I want to read long before it hits bookstore shelves. Drives those who love me nuts around the holiday time!

But every once in a while, I get surprised. One of my book friends gave this to me:

hill-nos

I enjoy Joe Hill’s work as much as I love his father’s work. Of course, his father is Stephen King, a wonderful storyteller. Joe follows in his footsteps and at times excels past his father. When I heard that Joe was writing a new novel and it was going to be a biggun’, I was excited. I love big books and giving Joe a grand tapestry to work with is exactly what makes NOS4A2 one of my early 2013 favorites!

Of course, now I get to read it early. Because of the holidays and people who give books!

So my question for all of you is: What books did you receive this holiday season?

Wow me with a list! Make me jealous!

Then get to reading!

I wish I could make you jealous but I can’t. I didn’t get one single book this year. Usually my parents give me at least one book every Christmas and birthday but for whatever reason, it didn’t happen this year. It seriously bums me out.

I received the annotated Sword of Shannara.

I bought my wife The annotated Sword of Shannara (signed of course), the Hobbit (leather bound edition) and The Soddit by A.R.R.R. Roberts. It follows the adventures of Bingo \Sac\ Grabbings, a rather unremarkable Soddit of Upper Middle Earth. He ventures forth (despite very sore and swollen feet indeed!) alongside Gandef the Coughing Wizard and a band of psoriasis-scratching, who-knows-what’s-in-the-pipe-puffing (Welsh) dwarves, as they set out to relieve the haughty dragon Smug of his ill-gotten gold.

Well, I didn’t get any from other people but, after a really great friend bought me a Kindle(!), I went and got a few. The number one was Elizabeth Moon’s “The Deed of Paksenarrion”, a series that I’ve had THREE compilations of, the last being a hardcover, and read parts of, if not the whole thing, at least once a year.

One of these days, I’m going to get…
    The original Shannara trilogy
The Green Rider series by Kristen Britain
The original Black Company trilogy by Glen Cook
The Sassinak trilogy by McCaffrey, Moon and Nye
just to name a few :)

One way or another, I really want a complete set of “Emergence” by David Palmer!

Probably not very exciting to anyone else, but I got the newly published collected vols 1 & 2 of Pogo, which will forever remind me of my grandfather and which contains such classic lines as \The jute mill exploded!\ and \We have met the enemy and he is us.\ I also got the Outlander graphic novel, which I have been wanting to try.
