50 Page Fridays: George R. R. Martin

50 Page Fridays: George R. R. Martin

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

This week we get a peek at a previously out-of-print title from one of our favorites, the beloved George R. R. Martin. DRS Editor Anne Groell tells us just what we should expect from Fevre Dream, a vampire novel written by a master of modern fantasy:

“Many of you reading this probably only know George R.R. Martin from his groundbreaking series A Song of Ice and Fire—the magnificent saga that inspired the HBO series Game of Thrones. But the truth is that before Ice and Fire—before even his stint in Hollywood, writing for such shows as The Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast—George was penning stunning novels across a wide variety of genres. And probably the most popular and beloved of those is Fevre Dream, George’s unique take on the vampire novel.

Fevre Dream
is a pitch-perfect blending of gothic horror with the historical novel. Set in 1857, it chronicles a year in the life of Abner Marsh—a struggling riverboat captain who plies the waters of the mighty Mississippi in the waning days of the steamboat trade. The icy winter has all but wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet, and his prospects seem dim—until he is approached by Joshua York, a wealthy aristocrat, with a lucrative deal. Joshua wants a steamboat at his disposal, and is willing to play almost anything for the privilege. And if it seems like a deal too good to be true…then it probably is. For on during maiden voyage of the sidewheeler Fevre Dream, Marsh realizes that he is on a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than anything his most fantastic nightmares could conjure.

True Blood
meets A Game of Thrones. How could you lose? So dive on in, and see if you don’t become not just an Ice and Fire fan, but a true George R.R. Martin fan as well.”
