New Dark Tower Book Artist Named

lee-roland3

The Dark Tower saga by Stephen King is the perfect series to be featured on Suvudu.

Why? It incorporates everything that we love here. Fantasy. Science Fiction. Horror. It has been adapted into comic books. It will soon be adapted onto the silver screen and into television series. To me, the Dark Tower is everything a geek could ask for.

Seven books and a novella in the saga have been published for many years now, the story of Roland Deschain—gunslinger-errant on a quest for the all-powerful Dark Tower to fix reality—completed. There was no need to tell another tale. But when the door to Roland’s world opens up to Stephen King he takes notice, and that door opened last year with interesting results for all us Dark Tower fans.

The new book, titled The Wind Through the Keyhole, will be published sometime in Spring 2012. But like all of the Dark Tower novels, the new novel will be fully illustrated in the Grant Books release. Previous artists like Michael Whelan, Phil Hale, and Bernie Wrightson have lent their fantastic talents to cover and interior art.

Which led many of us to wonder: Which artist would be called upon to produce the cover and interior art for The Wind Through the Keyhole?

The answer has come in the form of an announcement from Grant Books:

DARK TOWER: THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE

Donald M. Grant, Publisher, Inc. will, in Spring of 2012, be publishing limited editions of this new Dark Tower novel by Stephen King which will be illustrated by Jae Lee.

We are not taking orders at this time, do not have prices and have not set a release date. Please do not call or email us asking for more information than is in this newsletter. Updates will be announced in future issues of this newsletter. We also advise you to sign up for Stephen King’s newsletter at stephenking.com.

Stephen King has agreed to sign 800 copies of a Deluxe Edition which will be issued in a tray case. These will also be signed by Jae Lee. In keeping with our policies of supporting long time
customers, owners of Deluxe Edition copies of THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA numbered 1-800 will have the first option to buy this Deluxe Edition.

In addition there will be a limited “Artist” Edition which will be signed by Jae Lee and will be issued in a slipcase.

There you have it. Jae Lee is the artist who will be supplying the artwork for The Wind Through the Keyhole by Stephen King. Jae is no stranger to the Dark Tower fan base; he has supplied the majority of the artwork for the comic book adaptations published by Marvel Comics. I’m excited by this. He is, in my opinion, a perfect choice. He has always had elements of horror to his work and a comic book artist always has aspects of fantasy and science fiction in every panel. Grant Books and Stephen King made an excellent choice.

That said, Spring 2012 can’t come soon enough! While the overall story arc for Roland is complete, there were several gaps of time in the Dark Tower series that lend themselves well to additional tales. The Wind Through the Keyhole is one of those.

Roland. Eddie. Susannah. Jake. And Oy. It will be like returning home to old friends.

Ka is a wheel…
